“My son began acting strangely when he was about seventeen; I put it down to teenage mood swings and rebellion but soon I had lost complete control of his behaviour. He was missing school and being rude and abusive to me and his brother. I tried to talk and reason with him, I tried to ground him, I stopped giving him money, I stopped doing his ironing, and then his washing but nothing worked. He would just stay out all day and night if he was grounded. Things started going missing; money from my purse, CDs, computer games, then the shed was broken into and the new lawnmower taken. He stopped going to school altogether and missed his A levels exams and then wouldn’t work. A friend of mine kept suggesting that he might be on drugs but I didn’t believe her. I went to a local community centre to see if there was anyone I could talk to about my son, a lady told me about Addiction Solutions and that I could get confidential advice, I didn’t do anything about it at the time.
"Eventually, at the end of my tether, I contacted Addiction Solutions, they gave me sound advice and with their support I confronted my son, in love, and told him that I could get him some help.
“I discovered that my son had started taking cannabis and ecstasy and then moved on to heroin. With the help of Addiction Solutions I was able to get him admitted to a drug rehab; unfortunately he took up using heroin within two weeks of being discharged. He is still taking heroin but with the support I received I was able to understand that it was his choice and was helped to find him a place in a supported housing scheme.
“Having him living at home was so detrimental to my health and my other son’s education was beginning to suffer and the situation became impossible. It’s really sad and I haven’t given up hope for him. When he’s ready to quit I will be back in touch with Addiction Solutions and I know they will help him when he wants to be helped.
